From Heart to Mouth
(Inspiration from Watch Your Mouth devotional by Dr. Kennetra Bryant)
“A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” Luke 6:45 NIV
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Proverbs 4:23 NIV
“May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.” Psalms 19:14 NIV
Many of us have our routine of daily prayer, reading and meditation; and if we’re being honest, we pride ourselves in following those routines. But what good does it do to become slave to a routine that’s not paying off in ways that matter most? What matters most is what God says and thinks about you and what others see and experience with you.
“God hears and discerns the heart of individuals who:
- Encourage or Mock
- Love or Hate
- Plot evil or Plan goodwill
- Speak harshly or Show Love
- Belittle others or Lift others up
- Disrespect or Honor God-given authority, relationships and loved ones”
What is in our hearts eventually comes out of our mouths. So, what have we used our mouths for? Are we chronic complainers—always seeing the glass half empty? Are we given to gossip—quick to speak ill about others and take pleasure in their times of challenge? Are we mean-spirited—speak harsh words or treat each other without regard, in the name of “telling the truth”? Do we harbor jealousy and envy and make haste to tear others down?
I submit that if the time we “say and believe” we’re spending with God is worth anything, we need God’s character to be seen in our lives. After all, we are His “Brand” Ambassadors. Our mouths should bless and encourage and build and restore, and our actions and behaviors should be aligned with what we say. This is the mark of those who truly love God.
Prayer: God help me to remove the covers from my eyes and begin to see “me”.
I have not always used my mouth for good and my behavior toward others at times has not represented You. God I ask that You restore, remake and remold me so that others see and experience Christ as they interact with me. That You Lord may say “well done my good and faithful servant”. Thank You for loving me like no one else can.
Love You All to Life!
