Just Wanted to Share – February 26, 2026

In 1892, Major Charles Douglass, youngest son of Frederick Douglass, and Charles’ wife Laura, were turned away from a restaurant at the Bay Ridge Resort and Amusement Park because of their race. In the spring of 1893, Douglas and his wife settled on the purchase of twenty-six and two-thirds acres of land that would become Highland Beach, adjacent to the resort location.

Highland Beach, Maryland, is a historic African American community and summer resort located in the Chesapeake Bay It became Maryland’s first African American municipality in 1922, attracting prominent Black figures like W.E.B. Du Bois and Paul Robeson, and remains a symbol of Black perseverance and cultural heritage, housing the Frederick Douglass Museum.
