Meeting At His Table
(Inspired by Be Still devotional readings by Pastors Kyle Torrence and Jonathan Cunningham)
“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” Psalms 119:105 NLT
“But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night.” Psalms 1:2 NLT
In these days and times, we want it all and we want it fast. If there’s a quicker way to expose ourselves or learn something new that’s the route we take. However, I submit to you that getting to know God takes time—a lifetime I might add. And the best tried and true way is to immerse ourselves in His Word.
Similar to an athlete or performer, if you want to be successful or make a mark, you have to hone your craft. As one writer said, “You have to put in the time and work; there are no shortcuts. You don’t accidentally become a student of Jesus.”
You may be familiar with the questions and popular responses a pastor often recited with his congregation:
Question: How much do you Love God?
Response: As much as you Love His word.
Question: How much do you Know about God?
Response: As much as you Know about His Word.
There is no getting around it—there is no abridged version, no devotionals, Our Daily Bread or Word For the Day readings that substitute for digging in and reading, studying and meditating on the Word of God. Yes, those tools are wonderfully inspirational and a starter for our journey but they are not the end goal.
And if we’re not careful, we will find ourselves not reading the Word at all! Oh what a cunning device the enemy uses—deceiving us into believing that inspirational readings alone are sufficient. And however inspired we may become, we still fall short of getting to know Jesus on a deeper level. We become an Eve of sorts and make room for the enemy to “sift us as wheat”.
Prayer: Lord help me to set aside time daily to meet at Your table that I may learn of You. Help me to attend my ear to you in such a way that I am able to block all distractions competing for and holding my attention away from You.
I know that spending time with You, Father will build the foundation for the calling You have on my life. Thank You, Jesus!
Love You All to Life!
