By No Goodness of Our Own
(Inspired by Mike Paalz’s devotional, Keeping God At Arm’s Length)
“This is what the Lord says: “Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know Me, that I am the Lord, Who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the Lord.”
Jeremiah 9:23-24 NIV
God has blessed us so much that we oftentimes give ourselves credit for knowing, understanding, accomplishing and thriving. We must always acknowledge God’s infinite power and give Him thanks for His immeasurable goodness toward us.
I am reminded that “our accomplishments are dwarfed when compared with God’s miraculous work, and rightly so. Our wisdom, strength, wealth: none of it is boast-worthy. [So, take care not to allow] pride and self-righteousness to [creep in and] keep God’s true righteousness out of your reach”.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me to resist the temptation to “rest on my laurels”, lean to my own understanding and operate out of a spirit of pride. I confess and embrace that I am nothing apart from You because it’s in You that I live and move and exist. And it is for this reason that I am determined nothing shall separate me from Your love.
